Novel Photonic Floquet Topological Insulator Developed at Technion

Researchers at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology have developed and successfully demonstrated a photonic Floquet topological insulator, a new device used to protect the transport of light through a unique, lattice of 'waveguides.' The advancement may play a key role in the photonics industry. A description is published in the current issue of NATURE (11 April 2013).

"…if your theory is found to be against the second law of thermodynamics I can give you no hope; there is nothing for it but to collapse in deepest humiliation" said the British astrophysicist Sir Arthur Eddington in the early 1900s. He was on to something. CQT researchers Stephanie Wehner and Esther Hänggi report in Nature Communications that obedience to the second law of thermodynamics could lie behind one of the most fundamental features of quantum physics: the uncertainty principle.

Suzaku Satellite's X-ray Imaging Spectrometer Reveals Remnant of Kepler's Supernova

An exploding star observed in 1604 by the German astronomer Johannes Kepler held a greater fraction of heavy elements than the sun, according to an analysis of X-ray observations from the Japan-led Suzaku satellite. The findings will help astronomers better understand the diversity of type Ia supernovae, an important class of stellar explosion used in probing the distant universe.

CERN Particle Physicist to Deliver Annual Robert Hofstadter Memorial Lectures

CERN physicist Fabiola Gianotti will be at Stanford Monday and Tuesday, April 8-9, to deliver the Physics Department's annual Robert Hofstadter Memorial Lectures. Gianotti is a senior research physicist at CERN and leads the ATLAS experiment, one of the two experiments at the Large Hadron Collider that detected the famous Higgs boson particle last summer.
