Quantum Materials Places Order for Equipment to Increase Production of Inorganic Quantum Dots

Quantum Materials Corp. (QMC) today announced it has placed purchase orders for the proprietary equipment necessary to commence increased production of inorganic quantum dots. The equipment is scheduled for delivery and deployment, on or before the end of the third quarter of 2014.

Quantum Chaos Observed in Scattering Behavior of Ultracold Atoms

The team of Francesca Ferlaino, Institute for Experimental Physics of the University of Innsbruck, Austria, has experimentally shown chaotic behavior of particles in a quantum gas. "For the first time we have been able to observe quantum chaos in the scattering behavior of ultracold atoms," says an excited Ferlaino.

Muon Spin Rotation Method Used to Investigate Magnetic Properties of Iridium Compound

The research unit that includes Associate Professor Kenji Kojima and Professor Ryosuke Kadono of the Institute of Materials Structure Science, KEK, investigated the magnetic properties of the iridium compound Cu1-xZnxIr2S4 using the muon spin rotation method. This was undertaken in collaboration with Principal Researcher Hiroyuki Suzuki and Unit Director Hideaki Kitazawa of the Advanced Key Technologies Division, NIMS.

Liquid Hydrogen Study Provides Key Insights for Planetary Models

The atmosphere of gas giants consists mainly of hydrogen, which is the most abundant chemical element in the universe. "We have very little experimental knowledge about the hydrogen in the interior of such planets," says Zastrau. "This is despite our very good theoretical models."

High School Students to Participate in International Masterclass on Particle Physics

More than 20 local high school students have been invited to participate in an international masterclass on particle physics in The College of Arts and Sciences. The event, which is Wednesday, March 12, will enable them to analyze data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s largest, most powerful particle accelerator, located at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, in Geneva, Switzerland.

Massive O-Type Stars Strip Away Nearby Protostars

The Orion Nebula is home to hundreds of young stars and even younger protostars known as proplyds. Many of these nascent systems will go on to develop planets, while others will have their planet-forming dust and gas blasted away by the fierce ultraviolet radiation emitted by massive O-type stars that lurk nearby.
