Media Advisory: ESA Emphasises Space-Based Solutions During COP28

As a world leader in Earth observation and space for climate topics, the European Space Agency will showcase programmes, applications and solutions that help to improve climate science, technology and action at the 28th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP28).

With global temperatures hitting record highs, and extreme weather events affecting people around the globe, COP28 is a pivotal opportunity to highlight the importance of collective action to face the climate crisis.

Satellites have played a key role in climate observations, detailing the major changes taking place across the planet, as cited in the IPCC’s latest Sixth Assessment report.

World leaders and experts will convene in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, for COP28, the latest United Nations climate change conference, which will be held from 30 November to 12 December 2023.

A wide range of ESA spokespeople will be available for the duration of COP28, remotely and onsite, to provide expert commentary on the unique and powerful ways in which space can empower the aims and ambitions of the Paris Agreement and support transparent reporting as part of the Global Stocktake process.

High-level ESA management including ESA Director General, Josef Aschbacher, and ESA Director of Earth Observation Programmes, Simonetta Cheli, will attend COP28, including during the Earth Information Day (3 December) and the Space Agencies Leaders’ Summit (4 December), as well as other dedicated events in the Blue and Green Zones.

Journalists accredited onsite are welcome to visit the ESA booth located in the Blue Zone (TA3-110). The booth will host a wide variety of demos and experts talks aligned with COP28 thematic days during the two-week programme.

Media interviews can also be accommodated at the ESA booth on demand.
