Klapwijk, who works at the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience at Delft University of Technology, will use the grant for his research into quantum materials. He attempts to understand the electrodynamic properties of quantum materials down to the nanoscale. He examines materials in which different ground states compete with each other. This gives rise to local differences in the material's electronic properties such as the conductivity and relative permittivity.
Shlyapnikov, professor of physics at both the Université Paris-Sud (France) and the University of Amsterdam, has been awarded the prestigious Grant for his project 'New collective phases in quantum gases: from few-body to N-body physics'. His project deals with ultracold dilute gases at temperatures of the order of nanokelvin (one billionth above the absolute zero temperature). The objective is to reveal collective phases with unexplored properties and to develop a theoretical description. Shlyapnikov was FOM workgroup leader at AMOLF until 2003.
ERC Advanced Grant
The ERC Advanced Grant is awarded to outstanding individual researchers for advanced, groundbreaking projects that open up new avenue in their field of research or other domains. The European Research Council receives thousands of applications each year and just a few hundred are awarded funding. The grant is worth up to 2,5 million euros.
