Epoch Wires, Inc., a New York startup company specialized in superconducting wires, announced today it has successfully completed manufacturing experiments to produce an infinitely-long Magnesium Diboride (MgB2) wire with excellent physical properties.
The new wire is produced at the lowest market price, and with high production capacity to make large-scale energy applications feasible and to meet mass market demand. The company has plans to start production in early 2014.
Dr. Serdar Atamert, founder and CEO of Epoch Wires Inc., said "Working with Magnesium Diboride as our base material guarantees low production and operating costs, however the main challenge we met was to make an infinitely long wire from this material in a high speed production line." He added "We have overcome the conventional barriers of superconductivity in large-scale energy applications."
One of the immediate applications of the new Epoch Wire is in MRI machines. The manufacturers of MRI machines are troubled by the increasing costs of current superconducting wires. In addition, operational costs of MRI machines are also increasing due to the shortage and hence the upward trending price of liquid Helium, which is used as the essential coolant. Magnesium Diboride wire cooled with cheap and abundant liquid Hydrogen represents a new era in which cost reductions can yield unprecedented benefits for the medical industry and for individual patients.
Prof. Bartek A Glowacki, co-founder, director of Epoch Wires Inc., and a Professor in the University of Cambridge, UK, said "Magnesium Diboride wire presents a unique opportunity for energy applications especially in conjunction with the emerging Hydrogen economy both as a coolant and as an energy vector." He added "Low manufacturing and operational costs are a typical blue print for revolutionizing the energy sector."
